Day 12

Today is Day 12 of Your Daniel Fast and if by now you still haven’t added exercise to your daily routine, you’re going to want to start.  Here’s a few reasons why.

sitting is the new smokingSitting is Killing You!!! Researchers have linked sitting for long periods of time with a number of health concerns, including obesity and a cluster of conditions that includes increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels. Too much sitting also seems to increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.  Unfortunately a lot of us, myself included, have jobs that require us to sit for long periods.  It’s not like it was back in the day when there was more factory work, and assembly line work.   Now a lot of jobs have been automated and require computer technicians who SIT.

Scary!!! Here’s a few helpful ways to keep moving throughout your work day.

1.  Stay active throughout the work day.  Maybe just get up every half hour and do stuff. Walk around, pump out a couple minutes of squatting, do some stretching, or a few jumping jacks.  Break up your sitting and avoid long stretches of unmitigated motionlessness.

2.  Standing workstation.  Just do it if you can; it’s well worth it. Consider presenting it to your boss with proof.  If he or she doesn’t go for it, you might have to rig up something yourself clandestine-style.

3. Stand while talking on the phone or eating lunch.

Once I  found out about the dangers of sitting I immediately started to get up and move every hour for 3-5 min and have already noticed a difference.  It’s very important to take these facts seriously and find a way to apply them daily.

Exercise-Happiness

Now on a more happy note. What can exercising do for you??? Happiness=Exercise=Happiness!!!  That may sound impossible but scientific research has directly linked happiness physical movement.  Regular exercise has even been proven to be an effective strategy for overcoming depression.  When you exercise your body naturally releases “feel good hormones” known as Endorphins. These are hormones that actually do help you to feel better almost instantly. You also release Serotonin which makes for a better night of sleep.  Evidence has also shown that regular physical activity can improve cognitive function, including improvements in memory and motor skill coordination. “Exercise is the single best thing you can do for your brain in terms of mood, memory, and learning,” says Harvard Medical School psychiatrist John Ratey, author of the book, Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. “Even 10 minutes of activity changes your brain.”  This is not an opinion, it is a scientific fact!!!  Want to start feeling less stress and improve your mood???  EXERCISE!!! Want to be smarter and more alert??? EXERCISE!!! Want to add years to your Life???  EXERCISE!!! 

There are many benefits to exercising, many different types of exercise and many different opinions about exercise. There’s one thing you need to remember, always do what’s right for you. Listen to the voice inside and let it guide you.  Keep Going!!! Be Well.
