It is Day 19 of Your Daniel Fast. Only 2 days left and you can cross that finish line. Over the next few days remaining we’re going to discover how Herbs and Spices can Spice Up Your food and Heal Your body at the same time.
Once you take out the extra salts, sugars and fats, food can become so bland, tasteless, and unappetizing. It is a major reason why you cheat on your diet and slowly start adding back in foods that aren’t good for you. Your mouth just gets bored lol. Well salt and sugar are not the only seasonings. Not by a long shot. There are literally hundreds of Herbs and Spices that can be added to create savory dishes that will make your mouth Happy and keep your body healthy.
Let’s start with GARLIC. Garlic is the oldest known medicinal plant variety or spice in existence. Not only is it a wonderful seasoning to add aroma, taste, and nutrition to your dishes, it also contains magnesium, vitamin B6, vitamin B1, and several other nutrients your body needs. The smell of garlic is somewhat strong and makes most people shy away from consuming it but what you don’t know is that smell fades quickly and the healing power of garlic begins running through your system. Because of it’s antibacterial and anti-inflammitory properties, garlic can fight many fungal and bacterial infections such as, coughs and congestion and allergies. This is an old school remedy I use all time that never fails to destroy a cough, cold or flu.
1 fresh lemon
3-5 garlic cloves (crushed)
1 tablespoon raw honey
1/2 tablespoon ginger (preferably fresh and grated)
1/8 teaspoon cayenne powder
1/8 teaspoon turmeric
1 cup of water
Combine all ingredients and stir well.
Now let’s see what garlic can do for the digestive system. Including garlic daily in your diet aids in eliminating any digestive problems. It assists in the normal functioning of the intestines for good digestion which is why it is essential to add to most of the foods you eat. Garlic & Sweet Potato Soup
2 whole heads of organic garlic
6 large sweet potatoes scrubbed and sliced
2 large red onions roughly chopped
7 cups vegetable broth (I use Massel)
Sea salt and ground pepper
chopped flat leaf parsley for garnishing
Preheat oven to 200C/400F
Place the whole unpeeled garlic bulbs in a small tray and bake for about 30 minutes.
Parcook the potatoes in boiling water for about 10 minutes.
Stir fry the onions with 2 tablespoons olive oil on medium/high heat for about 20 minutes until caramelized.
Bring the vegetable broth to the boil, and reduce to a simmer, and then add the drained potatoes.
Squeeze the roasted garlic pulp into the soup, stir through the onions, and season to taste.
Simmer for 15 minutes until the potatoes are cooked through, and the flavors infuse.
Pulse very briefly with an immersion/stick blender so still relatively chunky and rustic.
Garnish with parsley and serve.
Garlic is a SUPER FOOD and as such should be included in your diet on a daily basis. That old saying, “An Apple A Day Keeps the Doctor Away”, should be changed to A Clove of Garlic A Day…lol. KEEP GOING!!! Be Well.
